It’s hard to choose a camp. Having recently returned we were very pleased with our choice. A few tips. The visitors centre was rather chaotic. Stop only for the WC and to get your JPass stamped at reception (not that anyone will check). Then drive to the WR village and park in the gated car park as you enter on the right hand side (5jod). The camp will do a jeep tour at a time to suit you and will meet you there. Wear trainers/similar as you’ll be walking up rocks and sand dunes. They supplied water. We found a 4 hour afternoon trip perfect and watched the sunset drinking freshly brewed tea. The jeeps all go to the same sites in differing orders. This camp wasn’t too far from the village. No other camp visible from the site and not near a tour stop ( one domed tent site had jeeps stopping all day right next door- not pleasant). Talk to the guide about Bedouin life- it’s fascinating eg the village is one tribe. We had already dropped our bags at the camp before the tour (another benefit of being relatively close). Dinner was very generous with chicken/veg/potatoes etc cooked in the ground plus numerous other options. Breakfast was equally excellent. Considering you’re in the desert it was very impressive. More tea around the fire, watching stars after dinner. Slept well with door open waking up to a spectacular view.

I met Mohammed after my bus dropped me off short of the village of Wadi Rum. He kindly offered me a lift to the village and on the way we chatted, he was so easy to get along with. He was also very funny and we formed an instant bond. His enthusiasm about the Wadi Rum area was infectious, he showed me the cheapest places and gave me the kind of practical information not even the Lonely Planet could give! The Rest House was full so he offered me a place to sleep at his house and would not accept any money. I was so impressed that I booked a tour with him (at least 10% cheaper than what the other guides around town were offering). Mohammed is a charming and lively character with an amazing Bedouin heritage that he adheres to still. I highly recommend him to tourists exploring the area.

Mohammed was our (me and my husband, Steve) guide for a 3 day camel trek. We were very apprehensive about our camels being aggressive because of horror stories we had heard, not to mention our lack of experience on anything without wheels! Mohammed understood our concerns and over copious cups of sweet bedouin tea he listened to our questions patiently and explained all about his camels and how to ride them. This really helped our confidence and after this we were ready to go! The tour was everything we expected and more. We got to see the sites specific to our long-time hero, Lawrece of Arabia; Lawrence Spring, Lawrence House and all also all the other treasures the area has to offer. The food was a good standard, bearing in mind we were in the middle of the desert and most importantly our camels looked healthy in comparison to some of the scruffier ones we saw in the village. Our many camp was clean, warm and the highlight of the trip was falling soundly asleep in a cave at the end of a long day's ride.

Monika and me planned a trip to Wadi Rum for some months and read of many 'false Bedouins' in Disi village just outside the protected area. This made us very determined to seek genuine Bedouin guides in that area. We heard of Mohammed from a friend of ours in Dusseldorf and she told us such good things of him. We contacted him by email and although his written English was a little messy when we spoke on the phone we soon realised his spoken English was more than enough for us. Mohammed came to pick us up from Aqaba for a little extra money and we proceeded to tour with him in the Wadi Rum area. We only had 2 days so we chose a jeep tour. Mohammed showed us many beautiful sites and of course important information of these. He also gave us such insight into his culture. Danke Mohammed!
